THROWING SHADE AT TRUMP: THE HOAX ROCK ATTACK AT BOWLING GREEN
While the story of the apolitical Black guy who pretended to be a pro-Trump tagger borders on the humorous, many other alleged pro-Trump hate crimes would have been truly despicable—if they had actually happened. On the Bowling Green University campus in central Kentucky, for example, a young Black woman claimed she had been chased for several blocks by Trump supporters shouting racial insults and throwing rocks at her. Unsurprisingly, she was lying.
On November 9, the day after a 2016 election that seems to have been a sort of national April Fool’s day for hate hoaxers, Bowling Green student Eleesha Long filed a police complaint alleging a pro-Trump hate attack on her person. It read, in part, “While I was walking down Crim Street to ask for [presumably pro-Clinton] yard signs, three boys began to throw rocks at me.” Long went on to say that the men who attacked her were all white males “wearing Trump shirts,” and that they had followed her for some time, shouting profanity and tossing fist-sized stones. Long’s complaint was remarkably detailed, describing not only the appearance of each of the three male attackers but also exactly what each of them was wearing.23
The usual reaction followed. Bowling Green police officers took the complaint very seriously, asking Long to return to the police station and give a lengthy formal statement, which she did. A post to her Facebook page about what had happened went viral, garnering probably thousands of likes, shares, and other emoji-based online reactions. Perhaps more importantly from Long’s perspective, her claims gained her a great deal of sympathetic local attention, including multiple displays of support on the Bowling Green campus, such as a sympathetic social media post from the university’s vice president for student affairs and a full-scale town hall meeting on “Respect within Our Community.”24 This last reaction was exacerbated by Long’s legitimately upset father, who told attentive area media and police that he “couldn’t locate” his twenty-four-year-old daughter “for some time” after the reported attack on her. Imagine, for a moment, this poor man’s genuine fear.25
That fear turned out to be unmerited and unnecessary, however, as is common in these cases. The Bowling Green University campus police, a typical small force, quickly discovered that Long had simply made up the entire attack. Several police sources have noted that Long changed her story at will “multiple times” throughout the investigation. Lieutenant Dan Marcuso told Action News, on the record, “Several times the complainant changed her story about what happened, where it happened, and when it happened.” After becoming aware of these inconsistencies, police obtained a digital search warrant for Long’s Facebook and Verizon history—and discovered that she had apparently never been where she claimed she was at the time of the alleged attack. Lieutenant Mancuso was blunt: “[this] proved she was not in the location when she said it occurred.”
Entertainingly, the search of Long’s phone and internet histories revealed that she herself seems to be quite the racist, and an extreme political partisan.
